Why Getting Dressed Up is Good for Your Health

The colors, shapes, styles, and trends of clothing and fashion is ever evolving in this fast paced world.  Emphasis on outer beauty stretches across all forms of media, whether it be billboard advertising or how actresses look in your favorite Netflix series.  It's there, and it's present in this society every single day.  But why?  Why do we care so much about outer beauty? Some may say it increases sales, drives profits, or boosts views in business advertising.  And sure, it probably does.  But.  Why do we, as individual women, care about looking good?

Do we dress up for our Instagram pics?  For that cute boy in 4th period?  So our friends think we are put together?

*DISCLAIMER* Anyone who thinks any of those reasons above are the foundational 'Why' to why women take care of themselves physically, love to shop, put on makeup every day, style their hair, etc. is WRONG. (Because honestly, if we put on mascara & curled our hair for anyone but us, that desire wouldn't last long).

We do it for ourselves.  We do it because when we look in the mirror and love what we see, beautiful things happen inside of us.

The 'look good, feel good' mentality also happens to be scientifically proven.

In a recent article published by The Good Therapy (found at thegoodtherapy.org), a study about appearance and mood was heavily discussed. In this study, 100 women were interviewed about this very topic.  It was found that 96% of these women interviewed "believed that what they wear affects how confident they feel."

In the article about this study, it stated that the possibility of wearing certain clothes can even effect an individuals emotional state and improve the mood of the wearer. “The strong link between clothing and mood state suggests we should put on clothes that we associate with happiness, even when feeling low.” (Good Therapy, 2012).

Isn't this crazy?  We can improve our overall happiness and satisfaction with life simply by dressing ourselves in a way that makes us feel good.  Whether that be your favorite colors, comfortable styles, or fashion-forward trends, try to implement this more into your life for improved mood.

Karen Pine, author of the study and professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire said that, “Of course there will always be individual differences, but nonetheless recent research into enclothed cognition … confirms there is a strong association between what we wear and our psychological processes.” These individual differences she talks about above are those unique preferences we each have to certain styles, fabrics, brands, and so forth.  For example, not every girl feels great in the color yellow.  Some girls love yellow and the brightness it brings to a clothing article, but others feel better in periwinkle blue or ivory.  Differences like this are what make us uniquely ourselves.  Regardless of these preferences, the 'look good feel good' mentality still stands.

Karen continues on to state, "Clothes impact strongly how we feel and may also influence how we think, which we’ll be exploring further in our research.  It suggests we should give more thought to what we wear and even dress for happiness." (Good Therapy, 2012).  So next time you are online shopping or in a dressing room at your favorite store, think first if this piece of clothing makes you happy when wearing it!  This one change can literally impact the way you think about yourself and with what light you view the world around you!

Shauna Mackenzie Heathman, a certified image consultant and owner of Mackenzie Image Consulting in South Carolina, commented on this study, stating that, "The study mentions that happy clothes include well-cut, figure-enhancing items made from bright and beautiful fabrics.  To this, I ponder, isn’t this obvious?"  Well, if our Ypsilon Dresses team had anything to say about that, YES!  Nothing makes us happier than styling you girls for your big events. Our well-cut, figure-enhancing dresses from bright and beautiful fabrics are the obvious answer to the definition of 'happy clothes!"  Tap to scroll below through a few dresses that make us happy!
